If writing were easier, more people would do it. Or would they? I find that people typically do things only if they want to, regardless of how easy they are. I have been writing for several years now and, while it is easier now than when I started, I don’t feel as if it is “easy.” Perhaps as time goes on, and I continue to practice the art of putting pen to paper to produce coherent thoughts, it may approach nearer to “easy.” That is, in fact, a great hope of mine.
My first work actually came about during a deployment over seas as a member of the United States Army. War, which I will post in the future, was an exploration of expository writing on my feelings of war in general. It is raw, basic, direct, and saturated with emotion. This first foray into non-professional writing opened my eyes and mind to appreciate attempting to put thoughts into words on paper, a very complex and difficult practice.
Since then I have written several books. A series titled Terretheta, which is a sci-fi/fantasy/adventure story in a post-apocalyptic earth. Inspired by Lord of the Rings, and a variety of other fiction, it taught me valuable lessons about character development, story telling, and writing structure. But most of all, it showed me that writing is hard. I truly learned to appreciate authors of every sort, regardless of whether I liked their book or not; regardless of whether their books were good or not; and regardless of whether they were popular or not.
So here I am, finally publishing my own first book. The Heart of the King – Book 1, has been a work in progress for several years now. Inspired by my faith in Jesus, and motivated by my own failings as a young adult, this series will eventually cover the entire life of the Biblical character of David. Although he is the main character, minor players add depth to the story and set the stage for Otherworld, the fictional world in which they live. Rahab, Ruth, Samson, Esther, Job, and Abraham are just a few of the many people who play a part in the overall tale.
It was fun to write, terrible to edit, and nerve racking waiting for people to read the proofs and give me feedback. But here I am, perhaps a few gray hairs more than when I started, excited to see what you think of Book 1. Let me know!
Yay!!! So excited to keep reading your amazing books!! Awesome job!
Can’t wait to read them, John!!! I saw a glimpse of one in editing, and I couldn’t be more excited to finish the story!
Had the privilege of reading HOK book 1 before it was published. LOVED IT! Cant wait for book 2! Your writing is incredible John. Keep using this talent for the King!
